Supersaurus means “super lizard.”  This is referring to the dinosaur’s large size.  Supersaurus was about 138 feet long, and weighed about 55 tons.  Not many Supersaurus bones have been found.  Like the Apatosaurus, Supersaurus has had some confusion about its name.  It was first discovered in Colorado in 1972.  In 1979, in the same Colorado quarry, some bones from a “new” dinosaur were discovered and named “Ultrasauros.”  It was later found out that “Ultrasauros” was made up of bones from Supersaurus and Brachiosaurus.  Since the name “Supersaurus” had been used first, that is the animal’s name.
